Klink - Urban Game
Does technology make you free? A night urban adventure in the city of Matera
Matera is indeed one of the city that, at least in Italy, had done the most to support urban games and in 2017, when the Candidacy to European Capital of Culture was approaching, they decided to involve a group of association and creatives of the city to create a giant urban game for up to 200 people. I was invited to host my Urban Games Design workshop and then help with the production
The group of creatives were coming from all the kind of backgrounds
and they brought their experience and ideas to the table, I invited also Greg Foster, a theater maker from the UK that is now living in the Basilicata region, he shared with us the result of his own PhD, Theater for Gamers, together with design exercises and some game design theory there was enough in out plates to design 10 games!
At the end of the two days we had a name, a general structure and a date, October 25th, everybody was excited and ready to start the production.
We had 6 weeks to get the production right!
A urban game is composed with a lot of different aspect, from scene design to character development, everything needed to be designed. A trailer was prepared, the volunteers were trained by actors with experience in improv, the spaces were set up to create different experiences for the player. As usual the city of Matera was the perfect backdrop for an urban game like Klink. Everybody worked over hours in order to get ready for the final evening.
Welcome to the world of Klink!
The story of the game was a dystopian one, Klink, a new device that has been developed for the control of inmates, was instead being used on normal citizen as a way to control them and extract data for an evil big corporation.
The players had to first enter the Klink and then break it free thank to the interaction with characters that were spread around the city, waiting for them with challenge and rewards.
A success!
More the 120 players took the street, explored the city and completed the challenges, and the liberation from the Klink could indeed took place in the incredible terrace of Palazzo Lanfranchi with a breathtaking view over the Sassi and the Murgia Materana plateau. A great urban game from a great group of game designers.
